Types of Stainless Steel Pipes

Every SS pipe is made by one of three routes. Pick the route for pressure, size and cost; pick the grade for the service.

Welded pipe to ASTM A312 is pressure pipe in its own right, not a lesser product. Each length is solution annealed and tested like seamless pipe. Three rules of thumb cover most choices. Weld it, and you want an L grade or a dual certified heat. Run it hot under load, and you want an H grade. Put it in chlorides, and you want molybdenum: 316L first, then 317L or 904L, and duplex steel pipes where hot chlorides make stress corrosion cracking the deciding risk.

SS pipe dimensions & weight per metre

Weights per metre, calculated from nominal OD and wall with a density of 7.93 g/cm³. Use them for freight, lifting and support loads. For a single grade, multiply by about 1.01 for 316 grades and 1.00 for 304 grades.

We cap plain ends and fit bevel protectors on bevelled ends before anything moves. It sounds basic but skipping this is how seating surfaces get damaged in transit.
Bundles are strapped with non-metallic or stainless strapping, never resting against carbon steel. Carbon contact deposits iron particles on the surface — that is almost always where rust staining on new stainless pipe begins.
Thin-wall pipe, small-bore sizes and anything with a polished finish goes into wooden crates. A bundle strap is not enough when the wall thickness leaves no margin for dents.
Grade, heat number and size are marked on every single length. By the time a bundle reaches a receiving yard and gets broken down, the paperwork can go missing — the marking on the pipe is what keeps traceability alive.
Lengths are cut to 5.8 m or 11.8 m — one fits a 20 ft container, the other a 40 ft, and neither needs trimming at the other end.

When the shipment reaches you, store it covered, off the ground and away from any carbon steel in the yard. Most surface rust complaints on new stainless pipe come down to two things: salt air and iron dust. Both are avoidable with basic storage.

Stainless Steel Pipes FAQs

There are three: seamless pipe pierced from a solid billet, welded pipe formed from strip with a straight seam, and EFW pipe rolled from plate for large diameters. Seamless and welded pipe are made to ASTM A312 and EFW pipe to ASTM A358.

Choose 304L for general welded service, 316L where chlorides are present, an H grade such as 304H for creep-governed high-temperature lines, and 310S or 310H for furnace and hot gas service. Stronger corrosion duty points to 317L, 904L or duplex.

For most services, yes. Welded pipe to ASTM A312 is solution annealed and tested like seamless pipe. Seamless is preferred for high pressure, heavy walls and cyclic loading, and where a specification requires it.

Sizes run by nominal pipe size from NPS 1/8 upward, with outside diameters and S-schedule walls set by ASME B36.19M and heavier walls by ASME B36.10M. Large diameters are made as EFW pipe to ASTM A358.

Weight in kg per metre equals (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02491, with OD and wall in millimetres. For example, NPS 2 schedule 40S, at 60.3 mm OD and 3.91 mm wall, weighs about 5.49 kg/m.

Nickel and molybdenum make up much of the cost of stainless steel, and both trade on volatile metal markets. That is why quotations carry a short validity and why printed price lists go out of date quickly.

One heat meets both grades: the low carbon of the L grade and the higher minimum strength of the standard grade. Dual certified pipe can replace either grade in most specifications.
