SS 304 (UNS S30400, DIN 1.4301) has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, while SS 304L (UNS S30403, DIN 1.4307) is limited to 0.03% carbon. The 304L grade is low-carbon which removes the potential of carbide precipitation (sensitization) in the heat-affected region during welding, and thus it is used in welded assemblies which cannot be heat-treated (PWHT). Practically, the majority of the SS 304 Pipe Fittings are dual-certified 304/304L with the carbon content of the heat at or less than 0.03%.
ASTM A403 is the standard of the wrought austenitic stainless steel pipe fittings. WP304 designates the grade (18/8 — 18% Chromium, 8% Nickel).
