Monel pipe fittings are buttweld fittings made from nickel-copper alloy in two main grades: Monel 400 (N04400) and Monel K500 (N05500). They are employed in all those environments where standard stainless steel or carbon steel fittings are not effective in resisting aggressive corrosion, such as seawater service, hydrofluoric acid service, or marine offshore structures. They have a similar chemistry (63% Ni minimum) although the difference in mechanical strength performance is significant between both grades.
The most ubiquitous of the solid-solution-strengthened grades, Monel 400 has a minimum tensile strength of 550 MPa (80 ksi) and is used in most corrosive pipeline applications. Monel K500 is the precipitation-hardened alloy, which contains aluminum (2.30 to 3.15%) and titanium (0.35 to 0.85%) to provide it with increased tensile strength, nearly 57% higher than Monel 400 in the aged condition (ASTM B366 minimum: 862 MPa / 125 ksi). The important procurement requirement of K500 should always be in the aged condition. K500 fittings supplied in the annealed (solution-treated) condition do not meet the minimum mechanical properties of ASTM B366 aged condition. Always specify 'K500 in aged condition' on purchase orders and verify condition on the MTR.
