ASTM A815 is the standard specification covering wrought ferritic, ferritic/austenitic, and martensitic stainless steel buttweld fittings.
These fittings are commonly used in offshore, petrochemical, marine, and high-pressure chemical processing applications.
Both are duplex 2205 grades sharing the same DIN Werkstoff number (1.4462). S32205 specifies a tighter nitrogen range (0.14-0.20%) vs S31803 (0.08-0.20%), resulting in slightly higher and more consistent corrosion resistance. S32205 is widely considered the preferred grade. In practice, most mills supply material meeting both specifications simultaneously.
The PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of Duplex 2205 (S31803/S32205) is approximately 34-36, calculated as PREN = Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N. This significantly exceeds austenitic 316L, making duplex grades the preferred choice for chloride-containing environments such as seawater and brine.
