What Inconel 625 Is Built To Do
The alloy holds mechanical performance and corrosion resistance from cryogenic temperatures up to around 1093 degrees C, and that range is the reason it survives so many datasheets. The chromium and molybdenum handle oxidizing and reducing corrosion, the niobium and molybdenum solid-solution strengthen it so it does not need age hardening, and the high nickel content gives it near-immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking. In seawater and sour service it resists pitting, crevice attack and cracking together, which is a combination the austenitic stainless grades cannot offer.
ASTM B444 Grade 1 vs Grade 2: The Heat-Treatment Choice
This is the fold that separates 625 from every other nickel alloy specification, because B444 recognizes the alloy serves two different lives and heat treats it accordingly. Order the wrong grade and the material is correct on the certificate and wrong for the duty.

The rule of thumb: if the line runs below about 593 degrees C and strength matters, Grade 1 is the material. Above that, where creep governs, Grade 2 is the material and its lower room-temperature strength is the price of high-temperature stability. Annealed material also loses room-temperature impact strength after exposure in the 540 to 760 degree range, which is a second reason Grade 2 exists. State the grade in the enquiry; it is not a detail.
