ASTM A182 F91 Forged Fittings Manufacturer and Supplier

Metinox Overseas is a trusted manufacturer and supplier of ASTM A182 F91 Grade 9Cr-1Mo-V (9Cr-1Mo alloy with controlled additions of vanadium (V) and niobium (Nb) alloy steel forged fittings. Not a cosmetic addition, these additions result in the formation of fine carbide and nitride precipitates during normalising and tempering heat treatment which pin austenite grain boundaries, providing the creep resistance higher than F22 at temperatures above 560°C. The resulting microstructure is able to hold up the operating stress at temperatures where 2.25Cr-1Mo (F22) and 1.25Cr-0.5Mo (F11) forged fittings are already operating outside of the safe stress envelope. Metinox Overseas engineers high-integrity ASTM A182 F91 forged fittings, specifying the premium 9Cr-1Mo-V creep-resistant alloy. Our production profiles focus strictly on ASTM A182 F91 Type 1 and Type 2 microalloyed variants, ensuring optimal balance of Vanadium (V), Niobium (Nb), and Nitrogen (N) precipitates. These elements stabilize the structural martensitic matrix under extreme conditions, allowing our Grade 91 forged fittings to operate reliably above 560°C where standard F22 or F11 grades fail from creep-rupture. All forged components undergo strictly monitored furnace heat treatment cycles backed by comprehensive EN 10204 3.1 certification. Explore the complete selection of Alloy Steel Pipe Fittings and order all grades your high-temperature piping system requires, all with a supplier who understands the engineering of the material.

Chemical Composition of ASTM A182 F91 Forged Fittings

Element Min (%) Max (%)
Carbon (C)0.080.12
Manganese (Mn)0.300.60
Silicon (Si)0.200.50
Phosphorus (P)0.020
Sulphur (S)0.010
Chromium (Cr)8.009.50
Molybdenum (Mo)0.851.05
Vanadium (V)0.180.25
Niobium (Nb)0.060.10
Nitrogen (N)0.0300.070
Aluminium (Al)0.040
Nickel (Ni)0.40

The controlled addition of Vanadium (V), Niobium (Nb), and Nitrogen (N) is what distinguishes F91 from conventional Cr-Mo grades. These microalloying elements form fine MX-type precipitates (MC and MN carbides and nitrides) that pin dislocation movement within the tempered martensitic matrix, providing superior creep strength at temperatures above 560°C.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A182 F91 Forged Fittings

Property Requirement
Tensile Strength (min)585 MPa (85 ksi)
Yield Strength (min)415 MPa (60 ksi)
Elongation (min)20%
Hardness (max, post-PWHT)269 HBW
Metallurgical Compliance Inspection Note To protect against premature brittle failure, every ASTM A182 F91 fitting supplied by Metinox Overseas undergoes strict Brinell hardness testing post-tempering. In accordance with ASME SA182 criteria, the hardness ceiling must not exceed 269 HBW (22 HRC). We provide certified documentation showing full traceability from the raw billet to the final product.

F91 Alloy Steel Forged Fitting Heat Treatment

Heat Treatment Process Austenitizing / Tempering Temperature Range Cooling Medium Protocol Governing Code Mandate
Normalizing (Full Austenitization) 1900°F – 1975°F (1040°C – 1080°C) Controlled Air Cool / Forced Air Blast ASTM A182 / ASME SA182 Paragraph 7.1
Tempering (Subcritical) 1350°F – 1470°F (730°C – 800°C) Atmospheric Air Cool Minimum Tempering Temperature per Code

The normalise-and-temper cycle is the only heat treatment route that produces the fully tempered martensite microstructure required for Grade 91. Annealing or subcritical heat treatment alone does not satisfy ASTM A182 / ASME SA182 requirements and must not be used as a substitute.

F91 Alloy Steel Forged Fitting Pressure Rating Chart

Fitting Pressure Class Type of Forged Connection Nominal Size Range (NPS) Correlative Pipe Wall Schedule Basis
Class 3000 Socket Welding / Threaded 1/8" to 4" NB Schedule 80 / Extra Strong (XS)
Class 6000 Socket Welding / Threaded 1/4" to 2" NB Schedule 160
Class 9000 Socket Welding Only 1/2" to 2" NB Schedule Double Extra Strong (XXS)

Note: Pressure class designations per ASME B16.11 are nominal. Actual working pressure is temperature-dependent and is determined by the matching pipe schedule and allowable stress per ASME B31.1 Power Piping / ASME B31.3 Process Piping. At elevated temperatures (above 500°C), the allowable stress for Grade 91 is governed by creep-rupture data in ASME Section II, Part D.

Mandatory PWHT Requirement for ASTM A182 F91 Forged Fittings

PWHT for F91 is not optional — it is a code requirement. ASME B31.1 Power Piping requires post-weld heat treatment at 730 to 800°C, with holding time based on wall thickness (minimum 1 hour per 25mm, minimum 1 hour total). Insufficient PWHT temperature or time leaves the martensite structure in a hard, brittle condition that will fail by Type IV creep cracking at the heat-affected zone within the first 50,000 operating hours. This is the most documented Grade 91 field failure mode and is entirely preventable with correct PWHT.

For F91 socket weld and threaded fittings, PWHT applies to the completed assembled joint — not just the fitting body. The entire connection, including pipe and fitting, must reach and hold the specified temperature range. Partial or localised heating does not satisfy the code requirement.

Metinox supplies ASTM A182 F91 forged fittings in the normalised and tempered condition with hardness confirmed below 269 HBW. Hardness certificates are available on all IBR and critical service orders. For equivalent raw material in pipe form, seeAlloy Steel Pipes including ASTM A335 Grade P91 seamless pipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

PWHT is mandatory for F91 under ASME B31.1. The temperature range is 730 to 800°C. Holding time is a minimum of 1 hour per 25mm of section thickness, with an absolute minimum of 1 hour. Skipping or shortening PWHT leaves a brittle martensitic microstructure above 350 HBW that fails by Type IV creep cracking in service.

ASTM A182 F91 covers forged socket weld and threaded fittings per ASME B16.11 in the 1/4 inch to 4 inch NB range. ASTM A234 WP91 covers wrought buttweld fittings per ASME B16.9 in sizes 1/2 inch to 48 inch NB. Both carry the same 9Cr-1Mo-V Grade 91 chemistry and are used together in the same piping system — F91 for small-bore connections and WP91 for main-line joints.

No. ASTM A182 F22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) reaches its allowable stress limit at approximately 560°C. Ultra-supercritical boiler steam temperatures exceed 593°C and reach 610 to 620°C. At these temperatures, only Grade 91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) meets the allowable stress requirements in ASME Section II, Part D. Substituting F22 for F91 in ultra-supercritical service is an engineering non-conformance.

Metinox supplies ASTM A182 F91 forged fittings with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports as standard. Hardness certificates confirming below 269 HBW post-PWHT, IBR approval documentation, NABL-accredited lab test reports, and third-party inspection by TPIA are available on request for critical service and export orders.
