What Are Monel 400 UNS N04400 Pipe Fittings?

Monel 400 pipe fittings are nickel-copper alloy buttweld fittings made of UNS N04400 material, which consists of at least 63% nickel and 28–34% copper. These fittings conform to ASTM B366 / ASME SB366 (material) and ASME B16.9 (dimensions) and are manufactured in seamless and welded (WPNC) product forms from 1/2 NPS to 24 NPS.

Monel 400 is the only commercially pure nickel-copper alloy which can be used for hydrofluoric acid (HF) at all concentrations up to 120°C. HF attacks stainless steel, carbon steel and most nickel alloys. This resistance is due to the formation of a copper fluoride surface film which forms immediately after contact with HF and repairs itself when damaged. This results in Monel 400 being the material of choice for HF (alkylation) unit piping in petroleum refineries around the world.

Beyond HF acid service, Monel 400 fittings are specified for seawater piping, offshore platform topside systems, desalination plants, marine hardware, chemical processing, and oil and gas applications.
