There are two broad categories of alloy steels, namely low-alloy steels and high-alloy steels. Alloy Steel T1 smooth tubes are also defined as those steels where alloying elements are deliberately incorporated in controlled amounts on top of carbon with the aim of developing particular mechanical and chemical characteristics. Some of the common alloying elements that are used in Alloy Steel T1 welded tubes are manganese, nickel, chromium, silicon, boron, molybdenum, and vanadium. Other alloying elements that are infrequently used in Alloy Steel T1 ERW tubes are aluminium, cobalt, copper, cerium, niobium, titanium, tungsten, tin, zinc, lead and zirconium.

Alloy Steel T1 tubes have an excellent hardenability, hardness, wear, toughness, and strength and provide an excellent combination of all the above compared to conventional carbon steels. AS T1 tubes can be subjected to certain heat-treatment to give them these improved properties. Some grades of AS T1 seamless tubes are used in really tough and specialized applications, like components of turbines in jet engines, aerospace systems, and nuclear installations. AS T1 welded tubes are also commonly applied to other applications that require magnetic response and are therefore largely used in electric motors and transformers because of the ferromagnetic properties of iron. Overall, wear resistance of AS T1 tubes can be enhanced by making the material harder, choosing alloys with higher carbon content without making it harder or by employing a combination of both methods. This specification applies to AS T1 ERW and seamless tubes with nominal and minimum wall thickness designed to be specified as being in continuous service at high temperatures.
