L is Low Carbon (max 0.035%). The main benefit is that SS 304L EFW pipes do not experience sensitization (formation of carbide at the boundary of the grains) when welding. This causes them to be much more resistant to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition than normal 304.
ASTM A358 defines 5 classes. Class 1 has to include a double welding and 100 percent radiology. Class 2 involves two times of welding and no radiography. Class 3 is single welded with 100 percent radiograph and Class 4 and 5 are various intensities of welding and radiographs. Metinox Overseas deals with Class 1 and Class 2 of high pressure service.
Yes. The pipes of EFW are manufactured using the plates that are made of quality pressure vessels. When they are produced to Class 1 standards (100% X-ray) the ability to withstand the high-pressure fluids and steam of industrial power plants and refineries is complete.
Although it is always desirable to have seamless pipes with a very high pressure, EFW pipe with weld joint efficiency of 1.0 (achieved with 100% radiography) has been found to have the same design strength in most industrial applications, often at significantly reduced cost at large diameters.
