These grades are titanium-stabilized stainless steels that are aimed at preventing the precipitation of chromium carbide so that they are resistant to intergranular corrosion. Both SS 321 and 321H pipes have good mechanical and corrosion resistance characteristics such as high load bearing capacity, strong construction, pitting, oxidation, stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion resistance. They are also good machiners, good welders and dimensional accurate. Type 321 stainless steel is Grade 304 that is titanium stabilized and that is specially used in applications that work within sensitization temperature range. The higher carbon content of type 321H provides better performance in high temperature strength and ability to resist intergranular corrosion in temperatures between 800 deg F to 1500 deg F (427�C to 816�C). The properties cause SS 321H pipes to be perfect in the application where high temperature strength is paramount and sensitization resistance.

Manufacturing Standards, Applications & Quality Testing
The Welded Stainless Steel 321 pipes cannot be used in highly oxidizing environments because of the chances of attack by knifelines. Also, titanium does not dissipate efficiently across the high temperature welding arcs and this constrains the application of SS 321H as a welding consumable. Nonetheless, SS 321 pipes are very effective when operating under temperatures that are above 500�C and it is being used where sensitization resistance and intergranular corrosion resistance is needed. Pipes of SS 321H also have improved creep strength and stress rupture resistance, and so, they can be used in high temperature service conditions.
The stainless steel 321 and 321H pipes of the Metinox Overseas are produced based on the global standards of ASME SA 312, ASME SA 358, ASTM A312 and ASTM A358. Pipes come in sizes as small as 1/8 NB up to 30 NB, ERW pipes between 1/2 NB and 24 NB, seamless pipes between 1/2 NB and 16 NB and EFW pipes between 6 NB and 100 NB. Normal schedules are SCH 20,30,40,60,80,120,140,160,STD,XS and XXS. Types that are available are round, square, rectangular and hydraulic pipes in welded, ERW, LSAW, seamless, and fabricated form. Lengths offered are; single random, double random and cut length with threaded, beveled or plain end.
Stainless Steel 321 and 321H pipes are subjected to strict quality checks including PMI tests, intergranular corrosion tests, flattening and flaring tests, macro and micro tests, radiographic tests, hydrostatic tests, chemical tests, and mechanical tests, before dispatch. These complete quality tests provide credible operation and appropriateness to severe industrial applications.

The difference in the carbon content is the most significant. Although SS 321 is the grade, SS 321H contains a high amount of carbon (0.04% - 0.10%) that gives it much better creep strength and much better mechanical strength at temperatures over 1000�C (537�C).
The addition of titanium is done as a stabilizing agent. It is unable to react with chromium, but with carbon to produce titanium carbides. This stops the chromium depletion of the grain boundaries thus rendering the pipe very resistant to intergranular corrosion (sensitization).
Yes, SS 321, as well as 321H, are highly welded. Nevertheless, due to the inability of titanium to transfer across a welding arc, it is advisable to implement SS 347 (Niobium stabilized) filler materials when welding 321 series pipes so that the weld can be stabilized.
SS 321H may be used in intermittent service up to 1500�F (816�C). It has high-carbon chemistry, which controls its structural integrity and holds back against oxidation significantly better than the usual 304/304L grades at these extremes.
SS 321 is non-magnetic in the annealed state, like any other austenitic grade. It can however get a little magnetic in case the material is subjected to cold working in the process of manufacturing the pipes.
