The grade of austenitic stainless steel SS 316H that has molybdenum in it greatly improves the total corrosion resistance of the steel. The 316H Stainless Steel is a great resistor to oxidation with a record of good performance in intermittent service to 870 �C and in continuous service to 925 �C.
The preparation of the Stainless Steel 316H EFW pipes must be done with the help of the tools that are explicitly allocated to the stainless steel alloys so that they do not get contaminated. SS 316H ERW pipes tend not to be post-weld annealed when welded in fat sections. Another outstanding feature of these pipes in the cryogenic temperatures is their strength and toughness. Type 316H stainless steel pipes are more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion than Type 304, particularly when the environment contains chloride.
Grade 316H stainless steel pipes have high mechanical properties and fabrication features and resistance in corrosion initiated by seawater and concentrated acids. During the handling and processing, due precautions should be observed so that it is not cross contaminated with metals that can easily be corroded and thus create discoloration at the surface. When water corrosion resistance is of high importance, continuous service between 425 deg C and 860 deg C is not suggested in SS 316H seamless pipes. One of the alloying elements, which provides the basic corrosion resistance and improves the oxidation resistance at high temperatures in SS 316H welded pipes at high temperatures, is its chromium content.

The "H" stands for High Carbon. Although standard 316 contains up to 0.08% of carbon, Grade 316H is regulated at 0.04 0.10%. This higher content of carbon offers much greater strength and creep resistance at temperatures beyond 500 deg C.
No. 316L, as a rule, is a low-carbon alloy to inhibit intergranular corrosion following welding but is very weak at elevated temperatures. 316H is needed in its creep-rupture strength, such as boilers and superheaters.
In the service conditions, 316H does not need PWHT in most cases. Nevertheless, it is provided in the Solution Annealed condition to make sure that it attains maximum corrosion resistance and mechanical properties before it is installed.
SS 316H is resistant to oxidation to intermittent service at temperatures up to 870 �C (1600 o F) and continuous service at up to 925 �C (1700 �F). It is particularly suggested when service exceeds 550�C in which creep resistance is critical.
The Molybdenum 2-3 percent content expands the general corrosion property of the pipe namely the ability to resist pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride rich conditions in comparison to standard 304 grades.
