The L in 316L is the abbreviation of Low Carbon. Although 316 can contain a maximum amount of carbon of 0.08, 316L contains a maximum amount of 0.03. Such a low concentration of carbon prevents sensitization (precipitation of carbide) in the welding process thus 316L is better used on heavy-gauge welded components.
It has received this name because it has Molybdenum (2-3%) and maintains a very high pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in seawater and locations where there is a high concentration of chloride.
No, SS 316, as the majority of austenitic steels, can not be heat-hardened. It can however be reinforced and hardened by working it cold, either by rolling or drawing.
These pipes have high resistance to oxidation of intermittent service to a maximum temperature of 870 deg C [1600 deg F], and continuous service to 925 deg C [1700 deg F]. It is however, specially suggested that 316L be used in the 425-860 deg C range when subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is needed.
It is normally enough to wash using warm water and mild soap. When dealing with dark stains one should apply non-abrasive cleaners and never put steel wool or hard chlorides because it may upset the protective layer of chromium oxide.
