The first distinction is the carbon content. SS 310S (UNS S31008) is a low-carbon alloy of SS 310. The reduced amount of carbon reduces the amount of carbide that can be formed upon welding and 310S is therefore a superior choice when it comes to welding or when the metal is subjected to high temperatures in extended periods.
Pipes made of SS 310S are resistant to oxidation under continuous service up to temperatures of 1150�C (2100�F), when reducing sulfur gases are absent. In intermittent service, it works to a temperature of 1040�C.
No, SS 310S is a grade austenitic stainless steel. Similar to 304 and 316, it is non-magnetic in the annealed state and is mostly non-magnetic in the cold worked state.
Although 304 and 316 are good in corrosion resistance, they cannot withstand temperatures at hot end of 800�C because of oxidation and structural integrity loss. SS 310S has more Chromium (24-26%) and Nickel (19-22%), which form a protective layer that does not allow further oxidation in extreme temperatures.
