Yes, Hastelloy G30 Hastelloy G30 (Alloy G30, UNS N06030) is known as the best nickel-based alloy to use in commercial-grade service in phosphoric acid, contaminated sulfuric acid, and complex oxidizing acid service, better resisting wet-processing phosphoric acid that contains impurities (fluorides, sulfates, chlorides, organic matter), sulfuric acid at all concentrations with contamination, and mixtures of lower-grade oxidizers, where imp Hastelloy G30 is a product designed by Haynes International in the 1970s to solve the shortcomings of the earlier G-series alloys as well as serve as the industry standard in commercial wet-process phosphoric acid equipment.
Balanced molybdenum (4-6%), tungsten (1.5-4.0%), controlled copper (1.5-2.5%), and niobium (0.3-1.5%) add to the high chromium (28-31.5%, which is far higher than that of C-276, 14.5-16.5%) make Hastelloy G30 extremely resistant to the complex corrosive environment of commercial-grade phosphoric acid. Wet-process phosphoric acid formed as a result of digesting phosphate rocks contains many corrosive impurities such as fluorides, sulfates, chlorides, ferric ions, aluminum compounds, and organic material, which form a very aggressive mixture of oxidizing reducing environment. The composition of G30 is especially designed to withstand this complicated corrosion mechanism.
Decades of field service and extensive testing can prove that Hastelloy G30 is superior in phosphoric acid conditions. In commercial wet-process phosphoric acid (usually 54 percent P2O5 concentration at temperatures up to 110 o C), G30 exhibits rates of corrosion that are generally 3-10 times lower than C-276 and far lower than 316L stainless steel or other typical materials. The alloy is highly resistant to uniform corrosion as well as localized attack such as pitting and crevice corrosion with the presence of both fluorides and chlorides.
Heat transfer G30 is an exceptional heat transfer choice in the full temperature range of dilute through concentrated (including oleum) and ambient temperature to boiling temperatures with sulfuric acid and its oxidizing contaminated impurities (such as ferric ions, nitrates, etc.), which promotes corrosion of other alloys. The molybdenum and tungsten contents provide good resistance to reducing conditions, whereas the high chromium content ensures a high resistance to oxidizing sulfuric acid than C-276.
The crucial point about the Hastelloy G30 is that it has a high level of resistance to nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixtures that is one of the strongest corrosive agents in the chemical processing. The great abundance of chromium gives it resistance against the oxidation of nitric acid and the balanced parental composition of Mo-W-Nb gives it protection against the highly formidable fluoride assault. This renders G30 invaluable in mixed acid pickling, stainless steel bright annealing, nuclear fuel reprocessing and semiconductor chemical applications in which HNO3-HF mixtures are used and all other alloys fail quickly.
Under the production of fertilizers, the industry standard of wet-process phosphoric acid equipment (reactors, evaporators, heat exchangers, piping systems, storage tanks) is G30. The alloy manages the entire process of phosphoric acid manufacturing by phosphate rock digestion by concentrating and purifying it, withstanding the convoluted blend of acids, salts, and contaminants that exist in the entire process. G30 is also very resistant to hot concentrated sulfuric acid and oleum in the manufacturing of sulfuric acid.
Hastelloy G30 is resistant to the oxidizing chloride solutions and resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Although less adaptable C-276 in the entire gamut of chemical environments, G30 is more effective in phosphoric acid, contaminated sulfuric acid and nitric-hydrofluoric mixtures where its highly specialized composition delivers defining benefits. The alloy has good corrosion properties even at high temperatures as high as 650degC in the right environments.
Important applications are phosphoric acid manufacturing equipment (wet-process acid reactors, evaporators, concentrators, clarifiers, filters), sulfuric acid service (all concentrations, especially contaminated acid), nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixtures (pickling, bright annealing, etching), fertilizer manufacturing (full phosphoric acid process train), ore leaching (uranium, rare earths), chemical processing using mixed oxidizing acids and nuclear fuel reprocessing. G30 is common by specification in terms of ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code of service in phosphoric acid and contaminated sulfuric acid.
The major factor to keep in mind with Hastelloy G30 is that it is designed specifically to be used in certain environments (phosphoric acid, contaminated sulfuric acid, HNO3-HF mixtures) rather than a general-purpose and versatile alloy such as C-276. C-276 or other alloys can be more effective or cost-effective in other applications that are not in the specialty of G30. Nevertheless, in the case of phosphoric acid production, contaminated sulfuric acid and nitric-hydrofluoric mixtures, G30 special composition provides better performance that warrants specification even at a usually high cost relative to C-276.
