Yes, it is universally accepted that Hastelloy C276 (Alloy C276, UNS N10276) is the most widely used and versatile nickel based corrosion resistant alloy in the world, with excellent resistance to oxidizing and reducing as well as crevicing corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking. Hastelloy C276 was invented by Haynes International in the 1960s and has developed to be the global industry standard with a service record of more than 50 years applied through the widest variety of corrosive service.
Their balanced nature (15-17% molybdenum, 14.5-16.5% chromium, and 3-4.5% tungsten), results in Hastelloy C276 having an incredible range of application that most other alloys do not have. The excessive molybdenum content provides excellent resistance to reducing acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric) and offers excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of about 68-72, which is far superior to the austenitic stainless steels, and comparable to the super duplex grades. Durability to oxidizing acids (nitric acid, ferric/cupric salts) and desirable oxidation resistance at high temperatures are guaranteed by the composition of chromium.
Its addition of tungsten increases corrosion resistance not only in reducing but also in oxidizing conditions especially in hydrochloric acid and presence of chloride ions. The minimal amount of carbide (0.02% maximum) reduces the amount of carbide that can be deposited in the weld heat-affected areas and C276 can be used in the as-welded state in most applications without after-weld heat treatment.
Numerous decades of field service and laboratory tests prove the better functionality of Hastelloy C276. At sulfuric acid service, C276 exhibits superior performance over the entire concentration limit of both dilute and concentrated as well as ambient and boiling temperatures with the corrosion rates normally less than 1 mm/year in most sulfuric acid environments where the stainless steels perform disastrously. C276 is a good hydrochloric acid alloy when it comes to intermediate HCl concentration and temperature but specialized alloys, such as B2/B3, might be even desired when it concerns the extreme HCl service.
Where the environment is oxidizing (such as wet chlorine, hypochlorite solutions, and chlorine dioxide) C276 works well but better than C22 is found in the most oxidizing environments. C276 is the material to use in mixed acid environments and changing oxidizing/reducing environments. The alloy is totally immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and therefore it is preferable in seawater service, offshore oil and gas services, as well as in chloride contaminated environment.
Hastelloy C276 is highly sour-service-resistant to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2), and is very commonly used as an offshore oil and gas production equipment, wellhead component, subsea manifold, and pipeline system specification. The alloy is certified to sour service requirement standards of NACE MR0175/ ISO 15156. C276 demonstrates better crevice corrosion resistance in stagnant conditions than in seawater and in brine service, C276 is notably better than the super duplex stainless steels.
The alloy can withstand high temperatures of up to 1900degF (1040degC) in high temperatures in most environments with great corrosion resistance. C276 exhibits good oxidation resistance in oxygenating atmospheres, although the use of special high-temperature alloys can be used at temperatures higher than 1200degF. C276 is corrosion resistant and has the strength to withstand high temperatures hence it is applicable in chemical reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers and piping systems that operate at high temperatures.
Other important applications of C276 globally are chemical processing equipment (sulfuric acid plants, hydrochloric acid service, phosphoric acid production plants, acetic acid plants), pollution control (flue gas desulfurization systems, wet scrubbers) and pulp and paper (chlorine dioxide generators, bleach plants), pharmaceutical (multipurpose reactors, clean-in-place systems) waste treatment (incineration scrubbers, chemical oxidation), offshore oil and gas (subsea equipment, wellheads, manifolds, sour service, nuclear waste
The main factor when using Hastelloy C276 is that more recent alloys such as C22 have slight improvements in just a few environments (in team oxidizing chloride service) at slightly greater cost. Yet, C276 has a decades long record of use, is widely available, has a wide range of corrosion data, extensive experience with fabricators and has a lower cost than C22, so it is the industry standard in all but a few corrosive applications. C276 is the best combination of versatile corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, weldability, available and economic considerations.
