Metinox Overseas is one of the biggest manufacturers and distributors of Hastelloy B2(Alloy B2) Nickel-Molybdenum Alloy Flanges that have been designed to perform exceptionally in highly reducing chemical environments and have high resistance against pitting and stress corrosion cracking. Our ASTM B564 UNS N10665 Forged Flanges are composed of a high quality nickel-based superalloy that has a nickel (minimum 65%), molybdenum (26-30%), very low chromium (maximum 1.0%), and extremely low carbon (0.02% maximum), and offers unmatched resistance to reducing acids, as well as, excellent performance at as-welded condition which does not move to post-weld heat treatment.
They are best suited to severe reducing chemistry service between ambient temperature and 540 o C in oxidizing service and to 815 o C and reducing/vacuum service, and are best suited to chemical processing (hydrochloric acid reactors, evaporators), to acetic acid/anhydride production, phosphoric acid plants, sulfuric acid service, petrochemical operations, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and where elimination of grain boundary carbide precipitation is required. Its carbon and silicon content is so low to avoid sensitization during welding although the operators should not expose their oxidizing environment to ferric/cupric salts and high temperatures of 540-815 C resulting to the formation of brittle phases.

Yes, Hastelloy B2 (Alloy B2, UNS N10665) is commonly considered the best nickel based alloy to use in service in hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures with excellent resistance to reducing chemical environments such as hydrogen chloride gas, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid and other non oxidizing acid service with excellent resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking. Hastelloy B2, introduced in 1960s by Haynes International through a modernized argon-oxygen decarburization technology, specifically was developed to address the weld sensitization issues of the original Hastelloy B as well as to have maximum resistance to hydrochloric acid compared to all other commercially available nickel alloys.
The molybdenum base (26-30), nickel base (minimum 65) and extremely low chromium content provide Hastelloy B2 with unparalleled resistance to hydrochloric acid in both the entire range of dilute to concentrated solution including the azeotropic 20% solution and between ambient and boiling temperature. The very small carbon content (max. 0.02%) and low silicon (max. 0.10%) means that it resists precipitation of carbide grain boundaries in the weld heat-affected areas, meaning that it can be used in the as-welded state without any post-weld heat treatment.
Corrosion tests reveal that the rates are usually below 0.05 mm/year in most hydrochloric acid conditions where stainless steels would be disastrous. It is highly resistant to hydrogen chloride gas, and this property has ensured that the alloy can be used both in the liquid and vapour phase of hydrogen chloride systems, chlorination processes and other applications requiring this property. Hastelloy B2 is a material with the best resistance to sulfuric acid at some concentration and temperatures, acids and acid anhydride production, phosphoric acid production and a range of organic acid services.
Limitations that are essential should be known to be used well. The alloy is not to be subjected to oxidizing media, especially at the presence of ferric or cupric salts. Whenever iron or copper-containing equipment is contacted by hydrochloric acid upstream, the metal ions present in the acid pollute it and rapidly corrode Hastelloy B2 components. The alloy should never be subjected to any environment below 540-815o C (1000-1500o F) because they lead to the precipitation of brittle Ni4Mo intermetallic phases and Ni3Mo intermetallic phases and these tremendously impair ductility and corrosion resistance.
Hastelloy B2 can be safely used up to 540 o C in oxidizing atmospheres like air. The alloy may be reduced in temperature, inert gases, or vacuum between 815C and significantly higher temperatures, so it has found application in situations that require vacuum furnace work or high-temperature reducing atmosphere work. The good elevated temperature strength in the solid solution strengthened microstructure has no precipitation hardening.
Hastelloy B2 is widely employed in hydrochloric acid service, chemical reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers, evaporators, piping systems, valves, and pumps, acetic acid/anhydride production, sulfuric acid processing, petrochemical ethylene glycol production, pharmaceutical manufacturing and in herbicide and insecticide production and vacuum furnace equipment.
