What is ASTM A860 WPHY 42?

ASTM A860 is the standard specification for Wrought High-Strength Ferric Steel Butt-Welding Fittings for High-Pressure Oxygen Service and General Applications. WPHY 42 is the entry-level high-yield grade within this specification, requiring a minimum yield strength of 415 MPa — significantly higher than standard carbon steel.

The material must be completely killed and produced through a controlled melting process that promotes fine, well-dispersed sulfide inclusions. This provides:

  • Superior notch toughness for low-temperature and impact-sensitive applications
  • Excellent resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) in sour service environments
  • Good field weldability with pre-heat requirements per ASME code
  • Compatibility with API 5L Grade X42 and X46 line pipe

The calculated Carbon Equivalent value must not exceed 0.42% to ensure adequate weldability and mechanical performance.

CE Formula

CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15

Silicon Restriction

When vacuum carbon deoxidation processing is applied, silicon content is limited to 0.10% (heat analysis) and 0.12% (product analysis).

Alloying Element Control

The combined content of Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), and Copper (Cu) shall remain below 1.00%.

Heat Treatment Requirements

All ASTM A860 WPHY grades, including WPHY 42, WPHY 46, WPHY 52, WPHY 56, WPHY 60, WPHY 65, and WPHY 70, must undergo heat treatment to achieve the required mechanical properties. Fittings produced through welding or formed at temperatures above the transformation range must be cooled to an appropriate temperature before heat treatment. Accepted treatment methods include normalizing, quench and tempering, or stress-relieving procedures in accordance with ASTM A960/A960M requirements.

Hydrostatic Testing

ASTM A860 does not mandate hydrostatic testing as a standard production requirement. However, installed fittings must be capable of withstanding a hydrostatic pressure equivalent to 100% of the material's minimum yield strength without leakage, cracking, or loss of functionality. The test pressure can be determined using the formula:

WPHY stands for Wrought Pipe High Yield. The number 42 refers to a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi (415 MPa). ASTM A860 covers wrought high-strength ferric steel butt-welding fittings for high-pressure gas and oil transmission. WPHY 42 is the base high-yield grade in this specification, designed to match API 5L X42 and X46 pipeline steel.

ASTM A234 WPB is the standard carbon steel fitting for moderate-pressure service with a minimum yield of only 240 MPa. WPHY 42 provides 73% higher yield strength (415 MPa), superior notch toughness, HIC resistance, and is specifically designed for high-pressure gas and oil transmission pipelines. WPB cannot substitute WPHY 42 in high-pressure applications.

WPHY 42 fittings are intended for use with API 5L Grade X42 line pipe, as well as ASTM A53 Grade B. The matching yield strength ensures the fitting is never the weak link in the pipeline.
