The Metinox Overseas is the major producer and supplier of the ASTM A516 Grade 70 Carbon Steel Flanges, which is the best grade in pressure vessel and boiler application, which needs high strength and good notch toughness in moderate and lower temperature service. Our ASME SA516 Grade 70 Flanges are produced of high-quality pressure vessel quality (PVQ) carbon steel with controlled chemical composition of carbon (max 0.30%), manganese (0.79-1.30%), and silicon (0.13-0.45) and with minimum tensile strength of 485 Mpa and yield strength of 260 Mpa. These High Strength A516 Gr 70 Flanges have been created with the specific focus on the demanding pressure vessel operations, storage tanks, boiler construction that can operate under -29-C -20-F all the way up to very high temperatures, ideal to use in ASME Section VIII pressure vessels, API 650/620 storage tanks, heat exchangers, process vessels, and critical petrochemical equipment.
The finer austenitic grain structure; enhanced levels of strength thus yield better resistance to brittle fracture and high performance in cyclic loading and thermal stress. ASTM A516 Grade 70 Weld Neck Flanges, Slip-On Flanges, Blind Flanges and Spectacle Blind Flanges are produced to ANSI/ASME B16.5 (1/2 to 24 inch NB) and ASME B16.47 Series A and B (26 to 60 inch NB) dimensional requirements in pressure classes ranging between 150 -2500 pound. All flanges are rigorously tested with respect to quality as dimensional inspection, PMI, tensile test, ultrasonic test as per ASTM A20/A961 requirements, and a normalized heat treatment is obligatory when the thickness is greater than 38mm (1.5 inches).

Yes, ASTM A516 Grade 70 is the premium grade within the A516 specification, offering the highest strength and best overall performance for critical pressure vessel applications. With minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa (70 ksi) and yield strength of 260 MPa (38 ksi), Grade 70 provides approximately 18% higher strength than Grade 60, allowing for reduced wall thickness in pressure vessel design while maintaining safety margins per ASME Section VIII Division 1 and 2.
The higher strength combined with fine austenitic grain size and killed steel practice delivers exceptional notch toughness and resistance to brittle fracture, making Grade 70 the preferred choice for demanding applications in oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries. The material's fine-grain microstructure enhances crack resistance, weldability, and performance under cyclic loading and thermal cycling conditions commonly encountered in pressure vessels.
Grade 70 is specifically designed for lower-temperature service where superior toughness is critical. While the minimum design metal temperature (MDMT) per ASME Section VIII is -29-C (-20-F) without impact testing, Grade 70's inherent toughness provides greater safety margins than lower grades. The material is approved for ASME Section VIII Division 1 and 2, API 650 atmospheric storage tanks, and API 620 low-pressure storage tanks, making it the industry standard for critical pressure vessel fabrication.
The excellent weldability combined with higher strength makes Grade 70 ideal for thick-wall pressure vessels, high-pressure applications, and vessels subject to severe operating conditions. For projects requiring both strength and toughness with excellent fabricability, A516 Grade 70 represents the optimal balance of properties within the carbon steel pressure vessel material family.

Let us support your projects with quality, precision, and performance.
Grade 70 is stronger (tensile: 485-620 MPa vs 415-550 MPa; yield: 260 MPa vs 220 Mpa), but may contain a little more carbon. Grade 70 offers about 18 per cent greater strength, which enables it to use thinner wall pressure vessels with the same safety factors as ASME Section VIII.
A516 Gr 70 is controlled-chemistry and fine grain pressure vessel quality (PVQ) steel, and has the controlled toughness, especially when used in ASME Section VIII. Although the two are comparable in terms of pressure rating, Grade 70 has more strength (260 Mpa vs 250 Mpa yield) and superior notch toughness to use in critical pressure vessel service.
Rating A516 Gr 70 has a minimum rating of -29-C (-20-F) without impact testing (ASME Section VIII exemptions in UCS-66). Where the temperature is less, impact testing is necessary or upgrade to A350 LF2 (-46-C) or A350 LF3 (-101-C) to serve in cryogenic conditions. Please, always refer to MDMT calculations as per UCS-66.
Plates =38mm (1.5") may be furnished in the form of as-rolled. According to specification, plates over 38mm need to be normalized. Fabricated vessels may require stress relieving or PWHT as per the requirements of ASME Section VIII based on thickness, material and service conditions. See UCS- 56 regarding PWHT requirements.
ASME B16.5 A maximum continuous operating temperature of 427-C (800-F), same as A105. A516 is however optimized to moderate and low temperature service and is excellent in notch toughness. Above 427-C (954-F) change to alloy steel A182 F11/F22 or A182 F9.
Yes, having the right qualification. To comply with sour service per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, state HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) testing, limited hardness =22 HRC, product analysis and sour service documentation. Material should be in compliance with SSC (Sulfide Stress Cracking) resistance.
Low-hydrogen electrodes are to be used: SMAW E7018, GMAW ER70S-6, FCAW E71T-1 or GTAW ER70S-2. Preheat 95-150-C when thickness is above 25mm. Keep interpass temperature at less than 260-C. Heat treatment after welding, ASME Section VIII UCS-56. In accordance with qualified WPS according to ASME Section IX.
Yes, we offer ultrasonic examination to either ASTM A435 (straight beam) or A578 (angle beam) where so indicated as Supplementary Requirements S8 or S12 in ASTM A20. UT reports consist of scan records, acceptance criteria and operator certifications as per ASNT Level II/ III.
The European counterpart of A516 Gr 70 is P355GH (EN 10028-2) which has similar chemistry and mechanical characteristics (tensile 480-630 Mpa, yield 355 Mpa). They both are fine grain pressure vessel steels. A 516 Gr 70 is based on ASME/ASTM whereas P355GH is based on EN.
