Metinox Overseas is a renowned producer and distributor of the ASTM A516 Grade 60 Carbon Steel Flange that is mentioned to the pressure vessels and boiler services where higher notch toughness is needed in service at medium and lower temperature. These ASME SA516 Grade 60 Flanges are fabricated of high quality controlled chemical composition of pressure vessel (PVQ) carbon steel which provide tensile minimum 415 Mpa and yield 220 Mpa. It is applied in Welded Pressure Vessels construction, storage tanks and boilers, as well as construction of moderate to high temperature range, between -29 deg C ( -20 deg F ) to moderate and high temperature and this is why it is used by the API 650 storage tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchanger, boilers and chemical processing equipment.
The reason that it is superior to the normal structural steels in terms of notch toughness and weldability is the fine austenitic grain structure that is developed to be used in the production of killed steel. The Grade 60 Weld Neck Flanges, Slip-On Flanges, Blind Flanges and Spectacle Blind Flanges are designed to ANSI/ASME B16.5 (1/2 to 24 NB), ASME B16.47 series A and B dimensional (26 to 60 NB) requirements, and in 150 to 2500 PSI pressures. Both the flanges go through intensive quality checks such as dimensional inspection, PMI inspection, tensile tests and ultrasonic inspection as required by ASTM A20/A961 specifications and in some instances, normalized heat treatment is done on flanges when the thickness of the same exceeds 38mm (1.5 inches).

Yes, ASTM A516 Grade 60 is actually meant to be used in the fabrication of pressure vessels and boilers where better notch toughness is required. It is a specification of pressure vessel quality (PVQ) carbon steel with regulated chemistry and fine austenitic grain size that offers a high degree of resistance to brittle fracture when compared with normal structural steels. The material is made in the form of killed steel with fine grain practice thus making sure that the mechanical properties are constant and the material weldable all through the thickness.
Grade 60 offers tensile strength of 415 Mpa (60 ksi) and 220 Mpa yield strength; it is stronger enough to be used in moderate pressure environment but still has very good formability and weldability. The total controlled carbon level (up to 0.27% in the thin plate form) and manganese level of 0.79-1.30% produce a good balance between toughness and strength. With an excellent ductile characteristic, the specification shows elongation values of between 21-27 percent based on the thickness, and it is used in the fabrication of pressure vessels.
A516 Grade 60 is certified to meet ASME Section VIII Division 1 and 2 requirement of pressure vessels, API 650 based on atmospheric storage tanks and API 620 based on low-pressure storage tanks. The material is also rated to operate within - 29-C ( 0-F to moderate high temperature ) hence its aptness in ambient temperature pressure vessels, petroleum product storage tanks, chemical processing equipment and generally in boilers. Grade 70 is used where it is necessary to have increased strength, whereas A350 LF2 is used at temperatures below -29-C.

A516 Gr 60 is quality pressure vessel (PVQ) steel and has controlled chemistry in order to enhance notch toughness, small grain size, and killed steel practice. Although the two are similar in terms of pressure rating, A516 Gr 60 is used in ASME Section Eight pressure vessel and API storage tanks that demand documented toughness, as opposed to A105 which is used in general piping.
Grade 70 is stronger (tensile: 485-620 Mpa vs 415-550 Mpa; yield: 260 Mpa vs 220 Mpa) and a little bit richer in carbon. Grade 70 is applied on high pressure vessels and low temperature service whereas Grade 60 is applicable on moderate pressures and temperature. They both are similar in toughness properties.
Yes A516 Grade 60 is extensively applied to API 650 atmospheric storage tanks and API 620 low-pressure storage tanks. It offers great weldability, sufficient strength and reasonable notch toughness to tank shell plates, bottom plates and nozzle connections.
Plates =38mm (1.5) are normally delivered as-rolled. Plates that are more than 38mm are supposed to be normalized according to specifications. Depending on the fabricated vessels in accordance with ASME Section VIII, stress relieving may be necessary. The heat treatment after welding (PWHT) requirements are based on service conditions and design code of vessel.
According to ASME Section VIII Division 1, the minimum design metal temperature (MDMT) is -29-C (-20-F) on the condition of no impact testing and with individual combinations of thickness and stress. Impact testing or upgrade to A350 LF2 is necessary in case of low temperatures. See UCS-66 exemption curves.
A516 Gr 60 can be welded with a high level of weldability with either SMAW (E7018), GMAW (ER70S-6) or GTAW. Thin sections do not usually need preheating but at thicknesses over 25mm preheating is recommended at 95-120-C. There should be low-hydrogen welding. Adhere to Section IX qualified procedures in ASME.
EN 10204 3.1B MTC with chemical composition, tensile properties, heat treatment records, and compliance statement of ASME section 8 1 of ASME, API 650 and API 620. Additional (ultrasonic, impact, drop weight) tests that can be done as per ASTM A20 specifications.
PVQ steel is a set of materials that are ordered to meet ASTM A20 standards on pressure vessel applications such as; killed steel practice, fine austenitic grain size, controlled chemistry, required testing and traceability. PVQ steel is designed specifically to make pressure vessels and boilers A516 is produced.
The grade A516 Gr 60 has the ability to operate in sour service provided it is qualified appropriately. In the H2S case, require the compliance with the NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirements in HIC testing, hardness limitation (=22 HRC) and sour service reports. See NACE standards requirements.
