Is ASTM A182 F1 Good Quality for High-Temperature Service?

Yes, ASTM A182 F1 is a much-known cost-efficient and stable grade of alloy steel to be used in moderate temperatures service in power generation, petrochemical, and refinery industries. F1 is a chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel created to offer superior elevated temperature strength and creep properties over plain carbon steels without compromising the good weldability and formability properties of F1, which makes it cost-effective to use in large-scale manufacture.

The regulated incorporation of chromium (1.00-1.50%) offers inhibition of oxidation levels and augmentation of development of a protective oxide coating during high temperatures as high as 540 C (1000 F). Molybdenum (0.44-0.65%) has been shown to enhance high temperature strength and creep resistance greatly due to the formation of fine carbide precipitates that inhibit grain boundary sliding and dislocation rearrangements during long term exposure to high temperature stress. This combination allows F1 to be used in components that undergo moderate pressure and temperature conditions e.g. steam piping in subcritical power plants, shells of heat exchangers and refinery process piping.

F1 has a high level of weldability because it has a low carbon content (0.10-0.20) and a balanced alloy composition. Thin sections do not normally need preheat whereas thicker sections might need preheat at 95-205C (200-400F) to avoid cracking caused by hydrogen. The general heat treatment on post-weld is post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) which is conducted at a temperature of 675-760 S (1250-1400 F) to eliminate remaining stresses and re-establish the best mechanical properties in the welded joints. F1 offers the ideal balance of strength, ductility, and toughness through the normalized and tempered microstructure of F1 to manufacturing fabricated components.

F1 is less expensive than higher alloy grades such as F5, F9, F11, or F22, and still offers sufficient performance to be used in applications up to 540 o C (1000 o F). It is specifically suitable to steam piping, boiler parts, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers of the conventional power stations, refineries treating non-corrosive hydrocarbons, and petrochemical plants where moderate temperature process streams are involved. F1 belongs to ASME B16.34 Material Group 1.2 and has long-standing allowable stresses in the design of products that were given in ASME Section II Part D.

Its major drawbacks are that F1 has a moderate temperature limit (top continuous service 540 C or 268 F) and lower creep rupture strength than higher chromium-molybdenum alloys such as F11 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo), F22 (2.25Cr-1Mo), or F9 (9Cr-1Mo). To use applications beyond 540 C, or to have high creep resistance, it is suggested to upgrade to F5, F9, F11, or F22. Nevertheless, in terms of its target service area, F1 offers a good balance of performance, welding, and cost.

ASTM A182 F1 Flanges

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

F1: F1 is chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel with 1.0-1.5% chromium and 0.44-0.65% molybdenum, which offers higher high-temperature strength and creep resistance up to 540 deg C ( 1000 deg F). A105 is pure carbon steel that can only be used up to 400degC. F1 has to be heat treated (normalized and tempered) and A105 may be provided in the forged state. F1 is better oxidized and has higher temperature mechanical properties than A105.

Thin sections (usually less than 19mm/0.75") of F1 may be welded without preheat at ambient temperatures over 10degC (50degF) and the base metal dry. The thicker parts are usually preheated to 95-205degC (200-400degF) in order to stop cracking caused by hydrogen. PWHT at temperatures of 675-760degC (1250-1400degF) is also advised as a means of removing all residual stresses and restoration of the best mechanical properties by all thicknesses. Welding procedures to be consulted are to ASME Section IX.

Maximum continuous service temperature of F1 flanges is 540 o C (1000 o F) in oxidizing environments. Temporary exposure to 565degC (1050degF) can be allowed based on pressure and time. At the higher temperatures (as high as 593degC/1100degF) upgrade to F5, F9, F11, and F22 grades that are better creep resistant. The temperature limits are spelt out in the ASME B16.34 and Section II Part D.

F1 (1Cr-0.5Mo) is the most economical grade of Cr-Mo that can be used to the temperature of up to 540degC and moderate creep strength. F11 (1.25Cr -0.5Mo) is a little stronger in high temperature and can be operated to 565degC. F22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) offers better creep strength and oxidation strength, up to 593 deg C. Applications that need high creep strength or are above 540degC use F11 or F22 despite the increased cost of the material.

Yes, every shipment would be accompanied by EN 10204 3.1B Mill Test Certificates that would contain the full chemical composition ( C, Mn, P, S, Si, Cr, Mo), mechanical properties ( tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, area reduction ) and hardness values, heat treatment parameters ( normalizing/tempering temperature and holding time ), heat number traceability, and dimension check. Other test reports are PMI, hydrostatic, and NDT (on request).

AWS A5.5 E8018-B2 (SMAW), ER80S-B2 (GTAW/GMAW), or other filler metals with the same 1Cr-0.5Mo composition should be used to weld F1 to F1. Where dissimilarity occurs between F1 and carbon steel, then use E8018-B2 or ER80S-B2. Nickel-based stainless Alloy 625 (ENiCrMo-3) or 309L stainless filler metals are to be used in place of F1 to austenitic stainless steel. Preheat 95-205 deg C and avoid interpass temperature exceeding 315 deg C. PWHT at 675-760degC is recommended.
